If you have done your research on underground horror then surely you have run across the name Bill Zebub.  If you haven’t, then don’t worry.  I can save you for lapsing on your duties as a film lover…I have gone to the underground mountain and I have gotten my hands on the films of Bill Zebub. Bill Zebub is the creator of some of the best indie American horror out there.  The kind of horror that isn’t locked down to a repeated formula varying from fun to intense, from twisted all the way to baked. With so many titles to choose from it was hard for me to find a good staring spot.  I started with “Bad Acid”.

“Bad Acid” is what the title says…a film about a bad trip.  For those of us, and I like to think I’m not alone here, who have fallen victim to a bad trip we know the potential hilarity of this film. The fact is some of the best memories some of us have are of our friends freaking out from an acid trip.  A brief cause for alarm sure, but hilarious in the end. To my luck “Bad Acid” contains those types of moments…the film is a fucking freak out in one of those never ending self induced time warps. “Bad Acid” even shows the best of the LSD world, the day tripper.  Remember day tripping?  Probably not. The film also brought me back to another part of my past that I also thought was hilarious.  Those times of talking an unsuspecting friend into trying LSD when really you know that they shouldn’t.  Again, some really funny film here if you can relate.  If you can’t then you really shouldn’t attempt to watch “Bad Acid”.  Why in the world is “Bad Acid” the most sentimental film about my past that I have ever seen?

“Bad Acid”, while truly an indie comedy of sorts, is also one of the best informative insights on LSD that exists on film.  Cheech and Chong may have done pot, but Zebub owns the LSC exploitation film. All of the facts are here.  Timothy Leery would double dose Zebub if he could and Sid Barret would punch him in the eye.  Bill Zebub has not only captured the true experience of the never ending day, but also the half schemed ideas that are a direct result of too much acid.  What works out in your head will only make sense to you, you want that to be your reality so much that your way is the only way. I loved how the film was a true representation to the warped perception that helps generate the great pieces of conversation of the expanded mind. Acid is a commitment my friend, “Bad Acid” is a testament to this fact.

“Bad Acid” was my first exposure to Bill Zebub as not only a director, but a character as well. I can only hope that the man himself is this loud, rambunctious and self spoken in real life. He’s a metal firecracker who smashes Metalica vinyl, prefers Jack Daniels and Pizza to Black No. 1 and loves legs.  As a script writer he is tight.  The script for “Bad Acid” is good enough to take the viewer out of the picture.  Not once did I feel like I was watching an indie film with a low quality stock.  I can honestly say that this film reminded me of the cult films of the 70’s.  Almost like a Russ Meyer exploitation film, but in a different way.  Those films aren’t great films, what they are is fun.  Films that are still snowballing film fans today. “Bad Acid” is a film that will be popping up in colleges when you and I have little ones getting pregnant at the dorms.
